The participant answers a question about whether she has had a hysterectomy. If so, she answers a question about whether she has also had any ovaries removed.

Specific Instructions

The Expert Review Panel notes that although the National Survey of Family Growth (NSFG) only includes women 18-44, this protocol could be used for all women who are over 18.

Definition

Questions to assess whether the participant has had a hysterectomy or has had her ovaries removed.

Purpose

The purpose of these questions is to assess the occurrence of hysterectomies with or without ovary removal. This measure identifies the impact of surgery on a woman’s hormonal system and will be important in any gene/environmental studies of hormones or hormonal-related diseases.
